Nepal’s Finance Minister Dr Swarnim Wagle has faced criticism following his remarks at the NDTV World Summit in New Delhi on October 23, 2026.
Wagle said that the era of associating Nepali nationalism with anti-India sentiment was over. He concluded that economic co-operation development and regional co-operation and better relations with India should be kept in sight in Nepal.
His comments triggered criticism from several political leaders, including former foreign ministers Kamal Thapa and Pradeep Gyawali. These two points they argued were irrefutable cannot mean neglect the sovereignty or territorial dispute of Nepal while maintaining friendly relations with India and also neglect its national interest.
Actor Rajesh Hamal also questioned the minister’s remarks adding to the public debate.
The controversy has raised an important question: Can Nepal strengthen its relationship with India while firmly protecting its national interests?
Closer cooperation with India may bring economic opportunities for Nepal, but critics say friendship between neighbouring countries must be based on mutual respect, equality and respect for sovereignty.
Nepal should not have to choose between economic development and nationalism. Both should go hand in hand smoothly.
